The Ames and Sioux Falls/Sioux City Community, as well as the hockey community lost a special person on June23rd, as Sioux Falls High School Coach and former Iowa State and Ames Hockey player TJ Riensch suddenly passed away. TJ's family was actively involved in the Ames Hockey community until they relocated to Sioux City Iowa. The Ames Hockey Family will be honoring TJ in numerous ways in 2010-2011 and beyond. The details regarding TJ's passing are below. We extend our heart felt sympathies to TJ's wife Laura and his parents and all of his extended family. ====================================================================================================== April 25th 2010
Welcome to all of you!
I hope this note finds you well and having a great spring. It has been a busy off season already, as the planning and preperation for 2010-2011 is always going on for our staff.
For our players they just completed their week of fitness testing and will now spend the month of May preparing themselves physically for the formal part of our summer program which begins the first week in June.
The 2009-2010 season was one of many ups and downs. With 17 of our 27 players being freshmen or sophomores we expected to go through some growing pains and we did have some of those. After doubling our win total in our first season, and then getting to 16 wins and finishing 2 points out of the final state tournament spot in 2008-2009, our expectations were cautiously optomistic for 2009-2010. Hoping to build off the foundation that was put down in years one and two, but trying to be realistic with 11 new players, and many who would need to play big varsity minutes we embarked on yet another journey through another Iowa winter.
At the end of the day we finished 8-20-4, far below our staff's expectations and far below our players expectations. While we competed and battled, we just could never quite turn the corner. The season was highlighted by a 5-0 win over the rival Des Moines Oakleafs in Des Moines, and a tough overtime road win at defending MHSHL Regular Season Champion Lincoln. A thrilling 3-2 overtime win against State Tournament Bound Sioux City on senior weekend in Ames would prove to be the 8th and final victory of the season.
Through all the trials and tribulations that our program endured this season there were many positives. On the ice we continued to lay a foundation for our program. As I have always said this is a process, not a one or two or three year thing. My goal is to build a program, not just a team from year to year. Part of that foundation this year was lots of freshmen and sophomores playing big minutes at the varsity level. They will all be better for it in 2010-2011, and they will need to be as we will be even younger than we were this past year as we graduated eight seniors. Needless to say our off-season preperation in the weight room and off the ice is of high importance.
Off the ice this year I could not be prouder. In the class room we had 24 of our 27 players finish with a 3.0 GPA, and earning league academic awards. Of those 24, eight of them had straight A's and tied for our Best Academic Performance Award at our Year End Awards Banquet. One player, our senior Co- Captain, Trevor White was awarded the President's Academic Award from our league for finishing his high school career with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher for all four years. An awsome job by our kids in the classroom and something that I'm proud of all of them for.
On March 27th we had our Year End Awards Banquet. Besides our academic awards I talked about above the following awards were given out:
Noel Erickson MVP- Sean Ranney
Don Erbach Best Defensemen- Trevor White
Sean Murdoch Rookie of the Year- Mark Wishman
Scott Johnston Varsity Leading Scorer- Sean Ranney
Best Defensive Forward- Trevor Weiss
Flannel Shirt Award- (Hardest Worker)- Dalton Weber
Players Player Award(Best Teammate)- Levi Mostrom
Most Improved Player- Taylor Linder
Iron Cyclone Award- Dylan Parle
Hard Hat Award(Off Season Dedication)- Levi Mostrom, Josh Anderson
JV Leading Scorer- Mark Wishman
John Russo Leadership Award- Roman Sailsbury
Russ Moore Sevice Award- Jo Mostrom and Russ Moore
Best Academic Performance- (Straight A's) - Orion Boylston, Casey Inman, Spencer Oh, Trevor White, Kevin Ranney, Zach Lister, Colten Boehm, Dylan Parle
All of these kids were very deserving of their awards, and contributed greatly as we continue to build our program.
As we look forward to 2010-2011 our sites are set on improvement and re-dedicating ourselves to the off season work that it takes to get better. We will be young, but we will be relentless in our work ethic, and continue to build upon the foundation and structure that have been put in place.
Thank you all for supporting Little Cyclone Hockey, and I look forward to seeing you all over the summer and next fall.
Best Regards,
Coach Schmale
